December, 2006: Cold Tracks

Letter to the Players
Welcome to the December Letter to the players! The Holiday season is in full swing and winter descends on Dereth once again. This year we have some new friends with us as well as some old ones returning after being away for so long. Check out what else is going on in Dereth for the month of December.

Cold Tracks
Ardry shook the snow from his boots as he stepped wearily into the Thorsten's Rest tavern atop the hill in Cragstone. He nodded to the other regulars and settled into a table by the fire, hunching over a mug of cider and a bowl of beef stew. Blood dripped into the stew from a gashed wound on his forehead, but he either didn't notice or didn't care.

The sound of clashing weapons echoed through the corridors of Queen Elysa's palace in Dereth. The noise came from the training room, where young Prince Borelean sparred against the veteran guerilla commander, Captain Tharnoch.

November, 2006: Remembering the Past

Welcome to the November Letter to the Players! As we approach the holiday season it is a time of change and growth for Asheron's Call. With the addition of new staff and the coming of the Free Trial, there has never been a better time to be a citizen of Dereth.

Remembering the Past
Hasin Lin cut his way through the thick underbrush at the edge of the forest clearing. In the middle of the clearing sat a simple wooden cottage and a small stone shrine. The sweet smell of burning incense wafted in his direction from the shrine, and he saw a thin curl of smoke drifting up from the chimney of the cottage.

Ardry sat cross-legged on the hard stone floor, backlit by the purple glow of the portal behind him. His leather armor was thoroughly riddled with cuts and puncture wounds and sodden with his own blood. He scrawled a hurried note in his journal.

October, 2006: Dance of the Dead

Letter to the Players
Festival season is upon us once again. This brings on tricks and treats around Dereth. This year will also mark the seventh Anniversary of Asheron's Call, which makes this a truly speacial time of year. Let's see whats new in Asheron's Call this month!

Dance of the Dead
Ardry held up a hand to stop him before he could go on any longer about another of his favorite esoteric subjects. "Not a real stag, Uncle. Just some clever heraldry on a new helmet, you see..." He opened the pack and lifted out a beautiful silver helm, fashioned in the shape of a stag's head.

In the warm, smoky confines of the Shining Shield tavern of Hebian-To, two men shared a plate of pickled eggs and a pot of green tea at a second-floor table. They were masked, much like the revelers who filled the tavern's first floor...

September, 2006: Come What Follows

With Grael finally defeated the people of Dereth can now breathe a sigh of relief. The sky has now returned to normal and the sun is once again a bright spot crossing it.Let's see what else is new in Dereth this month!

Adso sat by his camp fire, writing down observations in his journal in a neat and precise hand. Spread out on the ground beside him was a map he had drawn of the Isle of Ruin in the Halaetans, thickly marked with annotations.

Ulgrim sat cross-legged in the shadow of the Smoking Axe Tavern in Ayan Baqur, tracing strange patterns in the dirt. A shadow appeared, looming over him and obscuring the patterns he was tracing. He looked up and squinted in the harsh sunlight of the desert town.

August, 2006: Shattering the Dark

Letter to the Players
This month the people of Dereth struggle to find a way to defeat Grael and saveeveryone from certain destruction. Will Greal be stopped, or is this just the beginning? Find out what is new this month in Asheron's Call!

Shattering the Dark
It was the darkest time of night in Ayan Baqur, with dawn still over an hour away. A woman in scholar's robes sat at a table in the Smoking Axe tavern, reading through a thick pile of papers by candlelight. She seemed to be the only person in the building.

Ranarre stood outside the door to the King's private study, breathing deeply to steady his nerves. He closed his eyes, took one last breath, and knocked on the door. There was a pause of a few heartbeats, and then he heard the King's voice come through the door: "Enter."

July, 2006: Toward Ancient Shores

Letter to the Players
This month marks the coming of Grael to Dereth. It also means that yet again the people of Dereth must stand up to a mighty foe. Will we survive this time?

Toward Ancient Shores
Captain Tharnoch crouched behind a tall rock, perfectly concealed against the mottled texture of the stone. He had followed his Queen's orders all the way to this desolate and dangerous perch. His eyes scanned a beach strewn with many of these large rock formations and the enormous shells of dead mollusks. A stone's throw away, the pale sands gave way to cliffs of black rock. At the base of the black cliffs, a group of three Ruschk stood together, muttering to each other with grunts and hisses.

Aliester the Loquacious sat at his workshop table in the waning light of afternoon. He peered closely into the crucible containing his latest metallurgical experiment. The vessel was caked with a black, useless sludge.

June, 2006: From the Darkest Depths

Letter to the Players
This month we see the emergance of Grael and all of the signs that a dark force is once again threatening Dereth. Will anyone be able to stand up this new evil?

From the Darkest Depths
Ardry approached the Smoking Axe Tavern of Ayan Baqur. It was coming close to sunset, and the desert sun had lost most of its bite, but there was still heat rising from the sandy ground.

Girion was practicing in the Chapterhouse training room. He'd been at it for over an hour, punishing the hapless Target Drudge with rythmic blows of his heavy morningstar. He imagined his target to be a Viamontian Knight, and he could almost hear the behemoth's grunts and roars.

May, 2006: The Price of Loyalty

Letter to the Players
This month we see the addition of some long needed allegiance improvements. There is also the appearence of a Shadow Spire on the landscape, something that has not been seen in many years. What does it all mean?

The Price of Loyalty
Maegris sat at his desk, scribbling notes and observations in a giant book. All around him, his study was in disarray. Open books and sheaves of paper were strewn over every flat surface, and the mage's fingers were stained with ink.

The messenger scrabbled over rock and scrub, breathing hard. Each handhold and foothold was accompanied by a cascade of pebbles, clattering down the slope beneath. He cursed at all the noise he was making. He knew he was being pursued, and while his dark clothing would help conceal him in the light of a moonless night, all the noise meant that he may as well be calling out, "Here! Here I am!" to his pursuers.

April, 2006: Shining Runes and Shadowed Hands

Dereth has been an ever-evolving world since we arrived here many years ago, and this month is no different. Let's see what changes are in store for Dereth this month.

Shining Runes and Shadowed Hands
Ardry sat cross-legged by the campfire, writing out a letter in the flickering light. " Dearest Uncle Aliester, My latest sojourn into the islands settled by the Viamontians has turned up a wealth of information. It seems that the rumors of the new Shadowhunter armor are true."

Count Dardante sat cross-legged in a dark chamber, waiting. Nodes of magical energy glimmered on the walls high over his head, casting a faint purple glow through the room. The air was heavy with a fetid, swampy odor. The room was not notably cold, but goose prickles arose on his flesh, he who had summoned and bound a thousand spirits before.

March, 2006: Down Twisting Paths

Letter to the Players
We have seen some exciting changes over the past few months, as Dereth continues to evolve and change. We've seen the beginning of the PvP improvements that we have been discussing with the community, as well as some new character options such as the Title Panel.

Adso stood guard, eyes alertly scanning the horizon, ready to react to anything that appeared in his peripheral vision. All around them, the ground was blackened and littered with debris. Behind him, his Master knelt over a human corpse.

A dusty, travel-stained man with the brawny build of a smith stopped, sighing, in front of the Smoking Axe Tavern of Ayan Baqur. He wiped a thick layer of sweat from the flushed blue skin of his brow. He turned and noticed an old man, standing quietly in the shade of the tavern and nursing a cool mug of beer.

February, 2006: A Change in Tactics

Letter to the Players
Last month we saw some exciting new features and changes in Asheron's Call. We saw some movement on the part of Queen Elysa in the ongoing effort to Stop King Varicci and his forces. Will we see this trend continue, or will Varicci strike back?

A Change in Tactics
Atop a long stretch of castle wall, a solitary knight in black armor paced between thick stone crenellations. To the west, the sun was setting over the sea. To the east, snow-capped mountain peaks glowed with the red light of dusk. In the castle yard beneath, blunted weapons rang out as black-clad acolytes sparred with training masters.

The apprentice scaled the rocky face, rushing to his appointment with his master. He was young, leanly muscled, and moved with the graceful economy of motion that suggested a lifetime of warrior training. He was dressed in a light but sturdy combination of mail and leather armor.

January, 2006: Reprisals

Letter to the Players
Last month we saw many changes to Dereth. With the passing of Antius Blackmoor, the people of Dereth quickly came to see that war was coming and that the time for action was upon them.

Queen Elysa entered the royal map room to find a man in well-worn chain and leather armor standing by the table. He was old enough to be Elysa's own father, but he had the spare, leanly muscled build of a veteran who has survived innumerable battles.

The old Viamontian woman shuffled across the room, cradling a bottle of wine in her hands. She brought the wine to the table and presented it to her guest, a younger Gharu'ndim woman dressed in blue Amuli armor. The younger woman inspected the label and sighed appreciatively.
