December, 2005: Through Sacrifice, Strength

Letter To The Players
In the last month we saw King Varicci took his assault to the next level. Through some form of dark design, King Varicci was able to aquire and use a new type of weapon to kill Antius Blackmoor.

Count Dardante sat at his desk. pouring over a diagram of arcane sigils that had been copied from an ancient tomb by some of his assistants. He'd spent the last several days analyzing a sheaf of such tracings, and felt no closer to unlocking the mysteries they contained.

Through Sacrifice, Strength
The Map Room in the palace of Queen Elysa Strathelar was secured with a pair of massive oak doors, barred against unwanted interruptions. Flanking the doors were a pair of massive soldiers, among the elite of the Queen's forces.

Letter to the Players
During the last month, we had a bit of a break from the continuing assault of King Varicci's troops. We were able to celebrate the Festival season in grand style, and even had a few surprises along the way. Now that the festival season is over, what will happen next?

Ashes and Dust
King Varicci II strode down the hallway, followed by a retinue of robed councilors and huge, armored bodyguards. The clank of their footfalls on the bare stone floor was the only sound in the long, dark stretch of corridor. This remote section of the tunnel complex beneath Sanamar had been given over to a legion of mages and scholars, all laboring to fulfill the King's very ambitious demands

Two old men sat at a table in the Sanamar tavern, fussing at their meals and nursing mugs of ale.
"I've heard some awful things from the herald this morning, and this ale's not strong enough to take the edge off," said one, as he probed his spoon through his bowl of stew, looking for more hunks of beef.
"What's there to worry about now, Bruno?" the other one sighed.
"Oh, don't roll your eyes at me, Merro," growled Bruno. "Remember, I was right about the portals, wasn't I?"

Tricks and Treats
Ulgrim checked the tower room once more. Cold brew still stood on the icebox and a pile of Pyreals and other trinkets sat in the corner. He had enough stout and food to get him to where he was going, but he didn't expect he would need it. Dereth seemed smaller these days. The vast portal network could almost always be used to get within easy walking distance of where you needed to go.

Ardry stepped through the doors of the Four Shields tavern. He dropped his pack and bow wearily on a table, then slouched into a chair. There was one other person in the tavern at the moment, standing by the bar, nursing a goblet of something. He was a Gharu'ndim, dressed all in plain grey, with an eye patch covering his left eye.

September, 2005: Under Cover of Night

Letter to the Players

Welcome to the September Letter to the Players! We've got quite a large event in store for all of you this month. The September Event, "Under Cover of Night" marks some dangerous times for the Dereth, but also includes some new improvements players can use to defeat their adversaries. This event is currently scheduled for Wednesday, September 21st.

Under Cover of Night
Two youths perched on the top of a ridge. Though they were young, not yet fully grown, they had the broad shoulders and thick limbs of Aluvian mountain folk. The bows they clutched in trembling hands were huge and thick, requiring enormous strength to pull properly. They were crouched down, trying to remain hidden behind a rock formation, and spying on a gathering of warriors in the valley far below.

Ardry stepped out of the woods to behold the great stone battlements of the bandit chief MacDugal's fortress. He had a passing acquaintance with the inhabitants of the castle, and stopped by occasionally, when he was ranging in the area and needed to restock supplies. He approached and greeted the man who sat, trembling, by the front gate.

August, 2005: Friend and Foe

Letter to the Players

This month marks the first content update since the launch of Throne of Destiny and we've got quite an event in store for you. We've been very happy with the reception that AC:TD has received from all of you, including a large number of returning players, and we think you'll be very happy with what you'll be seeing in this event. The August event, "Friend and Foe," is currently scheduled to go live on Wednesday, August 17th.

Friend and Foe

High Queen Elysa Strathelar nodded, and the Tumerok emissary took his leave. After he and his retinue had filed out of the throne room, she dismissed her retainers. A dozen Royal Guards and ladies-in-waiting bowed and exited the modestly appointed hall. When they finished their exit, and the only remaining member of the court was Antius Blackmoor, she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples.

Seneschal Dalmour strode out of the Royal Hall and observed the prisoner before him. The man was shirtless, lash marks covering his back and sides. The man lay on his stomach, a massive knight pinning him to the ground with one trunk-like leg. Five other knights stood watch around the Aluvian captive.

February, 2005: Infiltration

Letter to the Players

Welcome to the February Letter to the Players! Last month in Dereth, unsolicited aid turned sinister. The Lugians who had aided Isparians by constructing Crafting Forges in Holtburg, Shoushi and Yaraq were seen leading monstrous assault troops in an attempt to steal an ancient magical relic. Who are these Lugians; why did they first aid us and then attack us? As Dereth begins to experience an unseasonable thaw, the scarecrows and snowmen no longer wander the landscape. In the new warmth, adventurers seek answers.

Infiltration

For a moment, Kresovus could not make sense of the scene before him. His own people, dozens of them, slaughtered one another in the streets. Fully armored soldiers fought near-naked warriors, as though half of his people had descended on the other half in their sleep. Skulls were split and limbs were severed. The streets were stained with purple blood.

Amaroth looked down at his flesh. The grey was fading, but the form remained. He noticed that the same was happening to his brothers. It seemed the Master's magics weren't as long-lasting as they had hoped.

January, 2005: Assault

Letter to the Players

A new year is dawning, both in Dereth and in the real world, and we're thrilled to have you with us for it. We hope that you've all had a healthy and happy holidays and that you're ready for 2005! This year will bring the completion of our ongoing migration of billing accounts away from Microsoft as well as the next expansion pack: Throne of Destiny, and we're very excited about both.

Assault

"Soldiers of Dereth! To me!" she cried. The Queen's Royal Guard, scattered and battered by the sudden attack, converged on Tirenia. They wore a patchwork of armor and cloak. Many had been asleep when the Vault had been breached. None of them had ever expected an attack in this most secret of locations. Now they paid the price for that arrogance.
